The new video series Homo Bulla (2019-2021) is completed. Seventeen videos focussed on soap bubbles, filmed in the empty Meelfabriek (flour factory) in Leiden.
Homo Bulla Est is a well-known proverb quoted by the Dutch humanist/philosopher Erasmus. The idea is that humans may seem solid and substantial beings, but life floats by like a bubble, vulnerable and fragile.
There is much more to explore in a soap bubble: the classical metaphor, the meaning in medieval vanitas paintings and many other associations.
